THE NEW DUNE: AWAKENING IS HERE

Greetings Sleepers, Update 1.5 is now out on all platforms!  This update is a major step forward for the game. It introduces a full single-player mode, full gameplay customization, the conclusion to the Book One story, and much more. And, starting today, Dune: Awakening is now also available on consoles, with head start available for Deluxe and Ultimate owners on console. Official console release is September 22nd.  But that’s just the latest. Today’s update is the culmination of over a year of hard work the Dune: Awakening development team has put into expanding, enhancing, and improving the game since launch last year. Combining that with today’s update, the game is bigger and better than ever. While many will now be coming into Dune: Awakening for the first time, many old friends will be returning for the first time in several months. If that’s you, there is a lot to catch up on. So, settle in, grab yourself a nice cup of Spice Coffee, and get ready for a comprehensive walkthrough of the new Dune: Awakening: everything new in this update, and everything that’s been added and improved over the past year.  If you want the tl;dr, there is also this Deep Dive video we released back in July: Check the full patch notes here. WELCOME BACK + LAUNCH REWARD PACKAGE Anyone back after 28+ days away will receive a welcome back package sized to their research tier. This gives you a great opportunity to catch up and get into the swing of things again if you’ve been away for a while. In addition, to celebrate the release of Dune: Awakening on console and this major update, everyone who plays the game between September 17th and October 22nd will receive a very special reward: Matron’s Decor!  INTRODUCING SINGLE-PLAYER Dune: Awakening now includes a full single-player mode. This is the whole game, on every platform, solo. The entirety of Arrakis, every storyline, every challenge, and every reward. When starting out, you can choose between three difficulty presets or customize every gameplay setting in detail. We’ve made a few changes to core mechanics in single-player, including: The Exchange now acts as a vendor with a large selection of items you can purchase The Landsraad simulates other guilds to ensure a dynamic and believable Landsraad competition that progresses even without player participation The Coriolis storm is still a very dangerous storm, but it will no longer instantaneously kill the player and wipe the Deep Desert. Players can now keep their progress there. The Cartographer skill now extends the player’s Fog of War reveal radius YOUR GAME, YOUR RULES At launch, even private servers offered only a handful of settings. Now, in single-player and on self-hosted servers, you control sandstorms, security zones (make Hagga Basin fully PvP or fully PvE), harvesting and XP multipliers, building piece limits, item durability, base decay, sandworm and Coriolis auto-spawn, what drops on death, and your maximum land claims. Play the game how you want, at your own pace. On rented private servers, available customization options depend on your provider. THE CONCLUSION OF BOOK ONE  The Great Convention Part III arrives today, and with it the final Chapter. For the first time, the entire story can be played from beginning to end in one run. NEW REWARDS AND IMPROVED STORY MECHANICS Every existing story mission now grants new rewards: swatches, weapon and armour variants and placeable decorations, from the Maw of the Worm Wall Relief to the Ascendant Throne of the Reverend Mother. Everything is earned retroactively.  Echoes of the Past, The Glutton, The Paranoid and The Jackal are now instanced levels, which means no more queuing to enter on very busy multiplayer servers. Several of the older bosses have moved onto our new boss system. ONE CHARACTER, MANY WORLDS  Characters, not servers, are now the centre of the experience. Your last-played character greets you in a new main menu, and a Characters tab lets you flip through everyone you've made and drop straight back in, choosing where to play each session. Backed-up bases and vehicles travel with you. Single-player characters remain exclusive to the single-player mode  Official server characters can be played on any official server and can even be moved to a private or self-hosted server (but not back again, to ensure the integrity of official servers)  Private server characters can be moved to self-hosted servers, but not back A FASTER ARRAKIS  Building for console unlocked even more performance improvements, also for PC: world streaming, rendering, memory, collision and physics, from Nanite foliage to baked NPC meshes to far more performant sandstorms.  COMBAT HAS BEEN IMPROVED  Improvements on how fights feel, especially melee. We've increased the Parry window for more lenient parries, and we've done a pass on the animations of NPC combos to give a larger tell on their attacks. Enemy stamina has been rebalanced, and heavy attacks now do the same damage as slow blade attacks, which allows for more risk and reward in playstyles. Enemy AI has been improved to make better use of cover. We've also changed dash to allow passing through enemies which is more lenient for getting out of situations where you have been cornered.  Since launch we've added two new weapons: Dual Blades and Pyrocket. We've completely reworked the Rapier into a parrying weapon. Our new boss encounters now have an onscreen boss health UI, and the testing stations have a level scaling system that allows you to choose your level of difficulty. This difficulty scale changes dungeon loot drops and enemy encounters. It also takes into account group sizes. PVP IS NOW SOMETHING YOU CHOOSE Every aspect of the game can now be played entirely in PvE. You can completely avoid PvP if you want to, without losing out on any of the content, gameplay mechanics, or rewards the game has to offer. The Deep Desert runs as both a PvE and a PvP instance on every official World. The PvP instance is back to launch conditions and pays 2.5x the yield on mining and harvesting to balance risk vs. reward. Hagga Basin is fully PvE, shipwrecks included, so critical crafting resources are no longer gated behind PvP. The Landsraad was rebuilt around missions, so the endgame can be competed in without fighting another player. PvP hasn't gone anywhere – it's concentrated where the rewards are richest, and on your own server you can even turn Hagga Basin into a full PvP zone thanks to the new gameplay customization options. YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOSE THINGS ANYMORE  When Dune: Awakening launched, there were too many ways to lose progression. That doesn’t have to happen anymore. Several quality-of-life improvements have been made to remove this kind of frustration from the game.  Base Reconstruction Tool: store up to three complete snapshots and rebuild them later, even on another world. Bound to your character; can't be lost on death. Vehicle recovery: destroyed vehicles recoverable for up to 30 days via the Vehicle Backup Tool, for a Solari fee and a durability penalty, whatever destroyed them. Base Recycling: dismantle a base outside the Deep Desert for 100% of its materials and stored items. Taxes are gone: base upkeep taxation removed entirely, all overdue taxes forgiven. Bases still need power to resist weather damage. Death penalty: the durability penalty upon death was lowered from 5% to 2%, equipment drain halved. PvP loot: chests are now instanced, everyone gets their rewards  A BIGGER, BETTER, AND DEEPER ENDGAME The Landsraad, Dune: Awakening’s faction vs. faction endgame, has been completely rebuilt into a mission‑driven framework that works equally well for multiplayer PvE and single-player. Resource turn-ins have been replaced by repeatable missions across combat, crafting, gathering, exploration and sabotage, with party sharing and a missions overview. Progress through twenty ranks from outsider to Atreides Envoy or Harkonnen Enforcer and unlock powerful rewards. This directly targets one of the biggest early criticisms: that the endgame felt thin or too tied to PvP to be enjoyable for most players who prefer PvE content. MORE ARRAKIS TO EXPLORE  The planet of Arrakis has been expanded with more things to do and more things to see.  New locations: Smuggler's Run, Blushing Caverns, The Broodworks, Wreck of Tyche, The Old Quarry, Ruins of Tsimpo, and Wind Pass Six new Imperial Testing Stations, each with a unique boss fight and escalating difficulty. Higher difficulty, richer loot. Five are repeatable runs reached from the overland map, solo or grouped, scaling to your party. New weapons: the Pyrocket incendiary gel launcher and Dual Blades, plus a Rapier rework, and Plastanium-tier weapon and armour blueprints from the new Testing Stations Dynamic encounters, new contracts, and a new in-game radio station  And don’t forget that, later this year, we’re releasing the Polar Cap as a free update. It will introduce an entirely new survival map full of new things to explore, discover, and craft!  RUN YOUR OWN DESERT  PC players can host a free self-hosted server for friends or a community with full control over the rules. Up to 40 concurrent players per server, no ongoing fees, you supply the machine. Note that this feature is still experimental and still improving. SPECIALIZE YOUR CHARACTER Specializations is a new progression system that lets you invest points across crafting, gathering, exploration, combat, and sabotage, unlocking traits that boost damage, durability, inventory space, mission rewards, and even entire technologies like Augmentation. AUGMENT YOUR GEAR  We’ve added Augmentations, powerful modifiers you can add to unique Tier 6 weapons and armor. These are found as schematics in Testing Stations and crafted using resources earned through Landsraad missions. They let you push your favourite gear further, tailoring stats and trade‑offs to your build, and once applied, augments are permanent, turning each piece into something more personal and hard‑won. AN ENDGAME THAT DOESN'T DEMAND A GUILD  Spice Melange is gone from the build cost of the Advanced Garment, Survival, Vehicle and Weapons Fabricators, the Medium Chemical Refinery and the Augmentation Station, specifically to put the endgame within reach of solo and single-player players. Augment crafting moves onto a bell curve, so good rolls land far more often. MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME Full character re-customization available in Arrakeen and Harko Village, new hairstyles and tattoos, and an expanded swatch system for Atreides, Harkonnen and minor Landsraad house colours on outfits, vehicles, weapons and buildings. Each School of the Imperium has its own armour set. Vehicles, containers and placeables can be renamed, and native controller support arrived on PC. A CLEANER PLAYING FIELD  We’ve waged a sustained campaign against duping and exploits. We’ve addressed item duplication, Solari duping in social hubs, durability restore exploits, schematic duping, out-of-bounds and undermeshing routes. We’ve also strengthened anti-cheat enforcement, player reporting tools, and added clearer communication when moderation action is taken. Server stability has improved dramatically since launch. EXPLORE ARRAKIS ON A WIDE RANGE OF DEVICES  Dune: Awakening has arrived on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, XBOX Series X|S and the Microsoft Store with the complete experience and console-tailored UI and controls. Two graphics modes: Performance (60fps, Dynamic 4K) and Quality (30fps, Dynamic 4K). PlayStation 5 Pro and XBOX Series X renders at higher native resolution in both modes and add enhanced visuals in Quality. The Head Start begins today, September 17th, for Deluxe and Ultimate pre-orders; the full console launch, physical editions included, is September 22nd. XBOX brings Game Pass, Play Anywhere with shared progression, Cloud Gaming, and ROG Xbox Ally.  On PC we're Steam Deck verified and GeForce Now supported.  Cross-play between platforms isn't in at launch but rest assured it is coming post-launch. FILMIC ARCHIVE DLC: OPTIONAL AT $9.99  Looks from Dune: Part One and Part Two, arriving September 22nd: the Aegis of an Unwalked Path armor, the Caladan Stormcoat, Harkonnen Cataphract and Atreides Hoplite armor, the Longhaul Stillsuit, three Sardaukar armor sets, Sardaukar weapons and emotes, and a 73-piece Sardaukar building set with 17 matching decorations. QUALITY OF LIFE AND OTHER IMPROVEMENTS  Beyond the highlights, there are a lot more enhancements we’ve released over the past year. For a complete overview of everything that has been added and improved upon on PC since launch, make sure to check out the Updates Page.  WHAT’S COMING NEXT  The Polar Cap arrives later this year as a free update: a new survival map and icy biome with new survival mechanics, resources, loot, craftables and its own standalone storyline. We also have more tie-in cosmetics planned for when the third instalment of Denis Villeneuve's epic Dune saga reaches theatres on December 18th. Full cross-play is confirmed for after the console launch, and we’ll share more information about that when we’re ready.  There is much more we want to do with Dune: Awakening and we can’t wait to talk about it.  For now, we hope you enjoy the new update and hope to see you out there on the sands, Sleeper. - The Funcom Team

The game will also be available with Game Pass and supports XBOX Play Anywhere. Players who own the Deluxe or Ultimate Edition can begin their head start on September 17. PS5 and XBOX Players are able to pre-load now.  The upcoming update will also launch on PC that same day. Please note that it will be larger than usual and will take longer for those with slower connections. However – the update lays the groundwork for more efficient updates in the future. To deploy the update, there will be a four-hour maintenance period from 10:00 CEST to 14:00 CEST.  More Arrakis Awaits Since launching on PC last year, Dune: Awakening has continued to evolve. Alongside the console release, the September update brings new content, improvements, and changes for all players. We will be sharing a complete overview of everything added and updated since the PC launch - as well as what is coming in the next update - soon. Until then, watch the new video and prepare for the desert! See you on the dunes!

Survival Expert: “The deserts of Dune: Awakening are incredibly realistic”

What would it really take to survive on Arrakis?  In a new featurette, British military survival expert John Hudson shares his perspective on the unforgiving desert world of Dune: Awakening, drawing on his experience advising on survival training in extreme environments, including deserts. Hudson highlights the authenticity of the environments created by Funcom’s Dune: Awakening team, particularly the game’s vast desert vistas and weather-sculpted rock formations. “The rocky outcrops that the team of Dune: Awakening have built are incredibly realistic,” Hudson says. “They look like they have been sandblasted by desert storms. They look sculpted by the wind. Yet within them you can see some hope of refuge. That is certainly true to the deserts I have been to.” For Hudson, the landscapes of Arrakis evoke real-world desert environments across the globe: the sweeping dunes of Namibia; the rocky, eroded terrain of North Africa and the American Southwest, including Utah; and Chile’s Atacama Desert, whose harsh, Mars-like surface has made it a location for planetary-exploration training. But the most compelling part of Frank Herbert’s imagined world, Hudson explains, is the way it pairs an impossibly hostile environment with human ingenuity. “The interesting part of Dune is that it invents a world where you wouldn’t be able to inhabit it without human technological intervention,” Hudson says. “The ability to create a micro-habitat that you can move around in is fundamental to survival.” In the world of Dune, that idea is embodied by the stillsuit: a life-preserving technology designed to help its wearer manage water and endure the planet’s punishing climate. While the technology is fictional, the core survival principle is not. In an extreme desert, people must protect their bodies from exposure, conserve resources, and create a personal microclimate through appropriate shelter and clothing. A Nuclear Reactor in the Sky Desert survival begins with understanding the danger posed by heat and direct sunlight.  “Any exposed skin needs to be covered,” he says. “Wear goggles if you have goggles. Desert environments are brutal, and they will kill you. The people who live in these environments are covered from head to foot.” Finding shade is an immediate priority for anyone suffering from heat exposure or sunstroke. Without protection, the body’s internal temperature can rise rapidly, impairing judgment, coordination, and the ability to make sound decisions. Hudson notes that hydration is equally critical. In normal conditions, a person may sweat roughly half a liter of water per day. In the desert, that can rise substantially - and during intense physical exertion, water loss can increase to several liters per hour. Even a relatively small hydration deficit can be dangerous. “If you are one liter behind on hydration, you will experience fuzzy-headedness, dizziness and become disoriented,” Hudson explains. “That is a bad thing for survival.” As dehydration and heat stress worsen, the body begins to malfunction. A rise of only a few degrees in core temperature can seriously affect physical and cognitive performance; at more severe levels, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can lead to unconsciousness and death. Sandstorms, Exposure and Isolation Arrakis is not merely hot. It is volatile. Hudson points to sandstorms as one of the desert’s most immediate hazards: sudden, violent events that can emerge with little warning and turn exposed travelers into targets for punishing winds and airborne sand. “Sandstorms can come almost out of nowhere,” he says. “You will get sandblasted.” This is where the environmental design in Dune: Awakening resonates most strongly with real survival experience. Weathered rock formations do more than define a striking landscape; they can offer shelter, shade, navigational reference points and a temporary refuge from the elements. The game’s deserts are designed as spaces that demand preparation and awareness. Players face a world where travelling unprotected can be lethal, resources matter, and the environment itself can become as formidable an opponent as any rival faction. The Ultimate Test on Arrakis From the towering dunes and jagged rock formations to the threat of sunstroke, dehydration and sudden sandstorms, Dune: Awakening brings the harshness of Arrakis to life through a world built around survival. Hudson’s assessment is clear: the desert is not simply a backdrop. It is an active, lethal force that must be understood, respected, and overcome. And for those brave - or reckless - enough to test themselves against the sands, perhaps even in a Worm Thumper Championship, Arrakis offers the ultimate survival challenge. Dune: Awakening is the open-world, survival game from Funcom, inspired by Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi novel and Legendary Entertainment’s award-winning films. Players are sent to the most dangerous planet in the universe, where they must survive the desert, build their power and shape the future of Arrakis. Dune: Awakening launches on consoles on September 22, bringing the fight for survival on Arrakis to a new audience. For Funcom, however, September 22 is more than a console launch - it is a major milestone for the new and improved Dune: Awakening. New console players, alongside both new and returning PC players, will arrive on Arrakis with access to every addition and improvement introduced since the game’s PC launch, as well as all new content and updates arriving in September.

Communinet signal #20

Guten Tag, Sleepers! Welcome to a special Communinet Signal: Gamescom 2026 Edition! We had a great time in Cologne this year between meeting new and familiar faces, sharing some exciting announcements, and showing off the game on PlayStation at our booth. Thanks to those who were able to stop by! And if you weren’t able to make it out, we have plenty of photos to share, some of which have a small guest appearance... Our little Muad’dib friend here was crafted by Dana, one of our community managers at Funcom. Gamescom Announcements Check out everything we announced during our exciting week at Gamescom! If you’d like to see more details on each, check out our blog here. Funcom at Gamescom: See Our Boothcom Once again, we were part of the Level Infinite floor area, alongside other heavy hitters of this edition, such as Control Resonant, Exterminauts, Hunt Showdown, and Afterworld.   Since we were showcasing our upcoming console version this year, we aimed to recreate a cozy living room feel with a desert theme at our booth. We had bean bags, big TVs, and just the right amount of spice so our visitors could feel one step closer to Arrakis.  Visitors could try out our console version for the first time. We had a preview version of the build we will launch on September 22 loaded into plenty of PlayStation 5 Pro systems, with single-player ready to go. An early-to-mid-game character was saved to the profile, and visitors could take it for a spin to try out several mechanics and content they’ll encounter on Arrakis, such as Testing Stations, building, driving and so on. Once the time was up, sweet loot awaited them on their way out in the form of Dune: Awakening-themed thumbstick grips and promotional DLC codes.  Some of our amazing DevQA team members (shout-out to Søren and Mia!) and other staff made sure the booth ran smoothly and that all our visitors had a good time and a better understanding of the game’s mechanics. They were not alone, though. We also sent more colleagues from other Funcom teams to help out.  From Joel, Scott, and Ole Andreas, who were interviewed, to our PR, community, and marketing teams, who helped the machinery run smoothly and greeted people on the show floor and behind the scenes in the business area, everyone contributed. Gamescom is a busy convention for everyone, and as they say, teamwork makes the dream work!  A Very Special Guest  Some of you who follow us on Instagram may have seen that we had a special guest show up at our booth. Daniel Moncada, of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fame, visited us and chatted with the team about our game, his love for gaming, and all sorts of amazing anecdotes. Of course, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to record a few fun videos with him!  We posted those on our Instagram account, which surprised many of you! Mr. Moncada was such a good sport that he also recorded a quick message for all of you reading the Signal.  Will this be the last time we see Daniel mingling with the team? Who knows? Better call Joel! (Note from the writer: This is why they pay me the big bucks.) The Adventures of Muad’Jim Lastly, we couldn't conclude the coverage of our presence at Gamescom without mentioning our new influencer star: Muad'Jim! As we mentioned earlier, we brought this little, hand-crafted friend with us to populate our social media coverage of the event on Instagram Stories.  Alongside our community team at Gamescom, Muad’Jim posted from our booth and visited other locations, giving our Instagram followers a behind-the-scenes look at Gamescom. He even made a few friends along the way! His undeniable desert power and love for gaming resonated with the crew at other booths, and other teams joined in on the fun. At the end of the day, we all love gaming and sharing fun stories with our audiences.   Once Gamescom wrapped up, we ran a poll to see if you’d like to see Muad’Jim return, and let's just say you all delivered! He will appear in future Instagram Stories, so follow us for more Muad'Jim adventures! XBOX SpecsFor Sleepers looking forward to playing on XBOX, we have released the specs! The work doesn’t stop there though! We have some things coming up like another community event, and not to mention more info on the Polar Cap coming soon. Stay hydrated, and see you in the next one.

Gamescom Is Over - Here’s a Recap of Dune: Awakening News

Greetings Sleepers, Gamescom has come to an end, and we brought plenty of news from Arrakis with us.  For those who couldn’t attend, here are some news you might have missed – from the first console gameplay footage to a new DLC and cross-play confirmation. We would also like to remind people about the update coming later this year – Polar Cap.  Filmic Archive DLC Arrives September 22 Launching September 22 for PC, XBOX, and PlayStation®5, the Filmic Archive DLC brings iconic looks inspired by Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two to Dune: Awakening. Step into the Aegis of the Unwalked Path armor, inspired by Paul Atreides’ visions of Fremen holy warriors in Dune: Part One. Face Arrakis in the Caladan Stormcoat, worn by Paul and Duke Leto in the film. The DLC includes: Harkonnen Cataphract Armor — Inspired by the imposing Harkonnen armor seen in Dune: Part Two.Atreides Hoplite Armor — Based on the Atreides combat gear in Dune: Part One. Longhaul Stillsuit — Inspired by the practical, weathered stillsuit worn by Gurney Halleck in Dune: Part two. Aegis of an Unwalked Path Armor — Drawn from Paul Atreides’ visions of the Fremen holy warriors in Dune: Part One. Caladan Stormcoat — Inspired by the coat worn by Duke Leto and Paul in the Dune: Part One. 73 Sardaukar building pieces: Build a fortress worthy of the Emperor’s most feared warriors. 17 Sardaukar Decorations: Add some flair to your fortress worthy of the elite military force of Arrakis. Sardaukar Legionnaire Armor Sardaukar Velites Armor Sardaukar Averruncus Stillsuit Sardaukar Oathblade Sardaukar Benediction Disruptor Emote: Sardaukar Kneel Emote: Sardaukar Blood Wipe Sardaukar Tactical Swatch The Filmic Archive DLC will be available for $9.99 and you can check the it here. Cross-Play Is Coming We are also excited to confirm that cross-play is coming to Dune: Awakening after the console launch. We are not ready to share a date just yet, but we will have more information as development progresses. Our goal is to let more players share their stories, alliances, rivalries, and battles for Arrakis—regardless of platform. Beyond September 22: The Polar Cap There is more to look forward to after launch. Arriving as a free update later this year, the Polar Cap is a sizeable new survival map that expands the experience. Some of what the Polar Cap includes: New survival mechanics New locations and resources New loot and craftable items A new standalone storyline For players who enjoy the survival loop of Hagga Basin, the Polar Cap will offer a very different kind of challenge. Rather than enduring Arrakis’ scorching heat, you will need to contend with extreme cold. And it is cold. Damn cold. Survival in this unforgiving biome will demand new tools, careful preparation, and clever ways to endure conditions unlike anything found in Hagga Basin. We look forward to revealing more about the Polar Cap soon.

Find us in Hall 6 between August 26th-30th in Cologne, Germany where you'll be able to get your hands on our upcoming console version and single-player mode. Come say hello!  Developer Deep Dive The beautiful concept art we have to share with this issue is the Water Shipper Drillshot and Water Shipper Rapier by our Senior Concept Artist, Ricky Westwood. For the Water Shipper weaponry, we wanted to continue the flowing lines & covered workings we had laid down with their version of the scout ornithopter but bring in elements of the character designs (such as the padding motifs) and therefore bridge these design languages further. Finally, we wanted some piece of shared industrial identity that would affect the silhouette, the circular motif works well for this. Community Corner You’ve all been busy the last month creating and sharing some incredible content. Take a look and get inspired to create your own for a chance to be featured in our next Signal! They commented some details on how it works: “Stamina is hooked up to the stress metric so it decreases with stress. Health is hooked up to recovery, so it goes down as you do exercise and goes back to full when you're ready to do more exercise. Power can be switched between body battery or actual watch battery. Hydration is just a timer basically, it goes down over 2hrs and when you tap on the gauge it goes back to full.” Whether you’re with a guild or solo, a new or veteran player, or looking for a couple of things to finish of your next project, u/garrisoncarI has you covered.
